Boston Design Market 2015 at the Boston Design Center

Oct 16 2015 · 0 comments · Design Events ·0

Last week featured the annual Boston Design Market (aka Design Days) at the Boston Design Center.  This is one of my favorite times “in the building” because I am always interested in the latest products and design trends. One of my goals is to be current for my clients so we can create cutting edge spaces.

The Design Center was all dressed up and we were even entertained by a Piano Man.

So stunning, don’t you love the chandeliers?

The Keynote speaker on the first day was Marisa Marcantonio of StyleBeat.   Melissa’s talk was titled The Considered Interior: Creating Captivating Décor With Personality and Style. This topic was very intriguing to me to say the least.  Marisa explored how to create personal moments by indentifying trends in the marketplace and how versatile pieces can mix into your interior design projects.

Here are a few of the trends for 2016 Melissa mentioned in her presentation:

  • Bohemian
  • Tribal
  • Chinoisserie
  • Aviary
  • Season-less Tropical
  • Tried and True Traditions
  • Blue and White
  • Natural Curiosities
  • True of Faux
  • Warm Modern

She emphasized that how you incorporate them is all about your personal style.  Great advice! Immediately following, there was a lovely reception at the Janus et Cie showroom where I had a chance to mingle with Melissa.

The Market Stalls are a new area at the Boston Design Center:

During Design Days, the Market Stalls featured curated items for sale and a variety of special appearances and programming.  And look what I spied…a painting by one of my Girls Just Wanna Paint pals ~Jody Regan, a true talent!

Look what else Caught my Eye…

I would like to paint all of the above, what do you think?

Day 2 of this year’s Boston Design Market featured Keynote speaker Kerry Joyce.  Mr. Joyce is a very talented Interior and Furniture Designer. He presented a beautiful program titled, My Life in Design.

He is so well spoken and his quotes and phrases say it all…

“Say the most with least”

“Beauty is found in the still and the silent moment”

“Elegant Restraint”

Mr. Joyce believes that Design is very similar to theatre or painting a canvas and he presented his 8 Key Parts to a Design:

  1. Back Story
  2. Composition
  3. Good Bones
  4. Garden Views
  5. Light
  6. Color and Texture
  7. Final Touches
  8. Tranquility

Such an interesting way to break down a design scheme ~ love it!

Adam Japko of Esteem Media and New England Home  magazine was in the Venegas showroom to speak about ways to harness the power of photographs, images, and graphics in an increasingly visual online world.  His lecture was most interesting and chock full of content.

Adam is a dynamic speaker and is always exposing his audience to cutting edge ideas about Social Media.   Interestingly,  he also feels that YouTube is the way to go for a designer.  When Adam speaks I listen!   He also highlighted how important it is that our social media be accommodating to viewers using mobile devices. Most of the world uses their phone 60% of the time to view social media, blogs, and websites and that percentage is growing. I also learned how to better refine my brand and a few other “trade secrets”.  And of course, it’s always a pleasure to be in the Venegas and Co. showroom.  The have the best, most creative kitchen design ever and Donna Venegas is such a sweetheart!

I also had the opportunity to hear John Lyle of John Lyle Design at the Ailanthus Showroom. Mr. Lyle is a charming Southern gentleman and I loved seeing his product designs ~ including  magnificent fireplace screens, sculptures, and colorful furnishings.

One of my favorite panels was Wired & Inspired: Behind the Scenes of a Virtual Showhouse sponsored by Dering Hall.  Designers of BDC’s Dering Hall digital show house discussed inspiration found online and “IRL” (in real life).  The designers each created a virtual room using Dering Hall products and inspired by the world of film.  The presentations were so creative and I adored that our very own outstanding Boston Designers were showcased including   Gerald Pomeroy, Laurie Gorelick, and Paula Daher, all pictured here.

The finale of Design Days was the New England Design Hall of Fame Inductee Unveiling Party where the 2015 New England Design Hall of Fame Inductees were announced.  Congratulations to all!

As you can see, it has been a very exciting couple of weeks!  My  head is filled with new and innovative design ideas and inspirations that I am anxious to share.  If you are thinking of sprucing up a space in your home before (or after) the holidays, I’d love to work with you.  Contact me by email or phone (781. 773.1192) for a consultation and we can start discussing your project!

xo,

Pamela
