Jane Scott Hodges, Linens, & Monograms

Oct 15 2014 · 0 comments · Design Events ·0

I recently attended Boston Design Center‘s Design Days, the capstone event of the year.  During our “Boston Market”, designers enjoyed three days filled with seminars, new product introductions in Showrooms as well as “Pop-Up” shops on the second floor.

One of the most outstanding seminars was given by Jane Scott Hodges of New Orleans, founder of Leontine Linens. Ms. Hodges recently published a beautiful book entitled Linens: For Every Room and Occasion.  She spoke about the tradition and beauty of fine monograms on linen.

In my experience, here in the Northeast monograms are not as prevalent as they are in other regions of the country, especially the South. When I traveled to Guatemala with my Atlanta friend and her daughter, it seemed everything they had was beautifully monogrammed ~ from their handbags to cosmetic bags to eyeglass cases. When I asked, I was told it was the Southern tradition.

Hearing Jane speak about her journey to find creative monograms (not just the typical fonts), I was indeed fascinated.

Jane’s journey began with her own Hope Chest when she was engaged to be married. She found some linens tucked away that belonged to her great grandmother. They were so finely done that she wanted some with her new initials. This is when Jane’s passion for the art of monograms was born.

Today Leontine Linens Flagship showroom in New Orleans  offers couture products & service catering to designers all over the world.

Ms. Hodges states her goal as: “to re-establish the important role linens play in living and entertaining, as crucial a part of the home as the rest of the décor we put so much thought into. And I don’t plan on quitting until satin stitched sheets, appliqued coverlets, and monogrammed napkins find their way into every home that aspires to be a showcase for gracious living.” What a beautiful sentiment and an artful goal!

I adored Jane’s Southern charm as a speaker as well as her warmth when I met her.  I think I will be ordering some monogramed napkins with my daughter’s new initials soon~ and maybe a couple for me…
