This past Thursday the New England ASID Chapter hosted its annual Awards Gala at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Boston. The Gala gives us the opportunity to gather with fellow designers and celebrate excellence in design. It was truly a memorable evening in every respect!…

I am especially proud of this year’s invitation. I was tasked with creating the invitation and with a little help my friend and Assistant Extraordinaire, Jen, we came up with this lovely design. The team at Boston Color Graphics did a wonderful job translating our paper mock up and created all of the print material including invitations, magazine ads, and large posters. I believe we did a great job conveying a lot of information in a creative way, what do you think?

On the night of the Gala, all the attendees donned their evening best. We may have had to slip on our Cinderella glass slippers on our drive to the hotel, but we polish up quite nicely…if I do say so myself.

Our President, Mary Beth Haggerty, did a grand job welcoming everyone to the event and kicking off the evening.

This year, a portion of our profits went to the Over My Shoulder Foundation. OMSF is a non-profit organiziation founded by Patti Austin and Dawn Carroll to ‘promote mentoring and Mentorology through music and design.’

This is the second time in a month that I have had the privilege of hearing Patti speak (also at the Design Bloggers Conference). At this event I actually had the chance to have a micro interview with her! Patti Austin has been singing since she was 4 years old. She is a performer, songwriter, vocalist and Grammy Award winner! She attributes much of her success to her mentors and godparents, Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington ~ quite a pedigree!

In fact, Patti’s personal experience as the beneficiary of mentoring is one of the reasons she and Dawn Carroll started the Over My Shoulder Foundation. They believe that “proper mentoring is the miracle that fosters creativity, can change lives, and move us all toward a society of greater inclusion, integrity and value.”

In addition to her work with the OMSF, Patti sings and performs all over the world. But, what I really love is that she is an incredible interior designer! She has been known to go to a friends house and say, “let’s move the sofa, I think you will be much more comfortable with it in this area…and while we’re doing that let’s rearrange the paintings…”. I just fell in love with her during the course of our conversation.

Ms. Austin is warm, outgoing and creativity just flows through her. Her talent is exceeded only by her graciousness!
