Do Flowers Really Bloom in March?

The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks

~Tennessee Williams

What better way to break free of the lingering gray New England winter than to attend the Boston Flower & Garden Show?  The Seaport World Trade Center was a feast for all the senses when I visited with my friend Mrs. Blossom (yes, I really have a friend named Mrs. Blossom).

Among the exhibits there was a plethora of hardscaping, particularly stonework.  This wonderful stone arch was created by Massachusetts Master Gardeners Association.  I love the clean,  modern lines of the design married with the bygone, adhesive-free construction method.  Would this not make an amazing entry to a garden?

We also enjoyed browsing through the wonderful container displays.  This striking arrangement combined bold colors, graphic shapes and contemporary design into a breathtaking presentation.  Hingham’s own Sarah Boynton created this incredible, award winning arrangement on-the-spot the first morning of the show.  It’s both beautiful and an engineering marvel.  How she was able to balance that lovely curved branch with the substantial cascade of blooms I’ll never know!

While we enjoyed visiting all the  exhibits, one display stood out as the highlight of the show for me.  This  outdoor living room designed by the Newport Flower Show was simply fabulous. The “hostess” as I thought of her, was decorated completely with plant material.  The attention to detail on her was incredible, right down to her hosta leaf bustle and tiny seed pod buttons.

The tablescape was equally thoughtful and beautiful.  Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a Spring Luncheon in this enchanting space?

Soon enough as Spring arrives and turns to Summer, we’ll all be enjoying the great outdoors.  I encourage you to consider your your outdoor space as outdoor living space.  A space to be designed and contemplated as an extension of your home.  Colors schemes, furniture, sculpture and plants are all part of the design of an outdoor living space.  For whatever you do : dining, conversing with friends, reading, painting or simply daydreaming, your outdoor space is yet another opportunity for you to personalize your home and incorporate good design.

xo,

Pamela
