A Poem & A Painting: Drawing Class

Jan 12 2015 · 2 comments · A Poem & A Painting, My Paintings ·0

This winter I am taking a Drawing Class to help improve my paintings. This class is very structured and revolves around learning how to draw the four shapes on which everything in our environment is based. This is a much different way of thinking and planning my paintings than I am used to and the learning curve may be much steeper than I realized!  This quote sums up my feelings on learning to draw perfectly…

I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.

~Pablo Picasso

Here is my drawing that includes the shapes of a rectangle, a cylinder and a sphere:

It really is harder than you might think.  In fact when I painted this original composition I made the most outstanding mistake: NEVER center a large tall object.  Grrrrr, I am definitely on learning curve!

Hopefully over the course of the class I will be able to hone my drawing skills and this will lead to an improvement in my painting skills!

xo,

Pamela

My Dear Pam, A drawing course is the absolutely Best, and most important skill for painting, (In my humble opinion).
Hang in there and struggle through. One day you wake up and !!! Ta Da!! You have got it! You already have the color and composition piece, master drawing and nothing can stop you.

I remember my first day at B.U., freshman drawing! Here I am, single, two daughters, quit my job to go to Art School, and I am sitting there trying to draw crumpled up brown paper bag! My thinking, WTF am I doing here, and I just quit my job to do this for the next four years!! (Thank you Grandmother, for making this happen).

Since the camera technology has become so good, I have gone back to painting, (you can’t fake it, you either can paint or you can’t). I hit the canvas with a bang, and found that it all worked out better, if I worked out the drawing and composition “problems” on paper first. So, I am drawing with colored pencils first, then the painting. Right now I am working on a portrait of “The Cellist”

Pam, you are still a Phoenix to me! I love your paintings,

    Best,
    Jean
