‘Tis the Season: Christmas in NYC

Dec 05 2012 · 0 comments · Holiday, Inspiration, Travel ·1

Last weekend I traveled with a dear friend to the “city that never sleeps”.   If you’ve never been to New York during the Christmas season, you simply must go!  Even more than usual, the city is stunning, vibrant and full of light.  I had a ball taking in the energy of Manhattan and the sights of the season.

Over-the-top store windows dressed for the holidays are one of my favorite New York holiday traditions. Here are some of the most outstanding windows New York City has to offer for the Holiday Season of 2012!  The artists behinds these displays do a masterful job of  capturing your imagination and drawing you in with their detail, the stories they tell and  sheer beauty.  Come take a tour with me…

Our first stop is Fishs Eddy in the Flatiron District.

Home to a wide variety of “edgy, unique and incredibly fun dishes and glasses”,  Fishs Eddy’s is a treat for the tableware aficionado.  And just look at these creative Christmas ‘tree’ window displays~love!

Inside the store the displays are just as colorful, creative, and packed with charm.  I love these vintage portraits!

Our next stop is on one of the most  glamorous streets in  the world: 5th Avenue…The theme for this year’s holiday windows is The BG Follies of 2012, inspired by popular acts of the 1930s.  These windows were, in a word, dazzling!“Ready for my close up Ziegfeld” The mirrors were moving and twirling, truly something to see… Take a peek at the amazing details… Love this stocking and shoe, too much for the BDC??

A view of  the full stage: Close-up of a single model: Can you imagine the work it takes (all year) to create all of these models??

Love the abundance of  feathers and white in this vignette:

This is from the vantage point of looking down into the orchestra pit, such an imaginative perspective. My friend and fellow Blogger 19 alumni, Sarah Sarna, has a wonderful post on the design and history of the Bergdorf Goodman holiday windows on her blog, you can read it here.

The displays inside the store are also  filled with eye candy.  I could barely contain my ooohing and aaahing!

After seeing this chandelier, I need to add some sparkle to mine ~ it looks naked compared to this!

Heading  down 5th Avenue, we come to  Henri Bendel. The theme for the Bendel windows this year is Deco The Halls.  Designers partnered with the Brooklyn Museum to create these displays inspired by the roaring 20s. This couple is made out of reused, recycled and glamorized elements.

Doesn’t she look chic?

It’s hard to believe her beautifully elegant skirt is actually made out of  800 cupcake liners and tulle…surprised? This gent’s suit is decoupaged sepia toned paper. Très fashionable, but I’m not sure he could sit down comfortably…This beauty is wearing a beaded gown of 12,000 black beans, incredible!

This is my favorite interior, EVER!  LOVE this shot, I may make this my Christmas card~shhhh…There’s a fun interview with Gilberto Santana, Associate VP of Visual Merchandising at Henri Bendel, where he discusses his vision behind this year’s decadent deco-themed Holiday windows. Read the interview here.

Madison Avenue is home to the Ralph Lauren flagship store and  no one does classic better.  Look at this totally glam Winter Wonderland… I just can’t resist a chandelier…

White is definitely in vogue, along with decadent, luxurious details:

I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of some of  New York’s most lavish holiday windows!  If you love holiday windows as much as I do, please visit my friend Rebecca Reynolds’ Twitter page and blog to find out about her #WindowsofWonder project!

Happy Birthday, Sweet Pagey! What a grand and beautiful trip…“Walking along past the store windows, into which she peers with her usual eagerness, her usual sense that maybe, today, she will discover something behind them something that will truly be worth seeing…”
